Grand Challenges Background

WHAT IS GRAND CHALLENGES? The medical, agricultural and sanitary innovations of the past 50 years have made an historic impact, and are largely responsible for the decline in annual child deaths from more than 20 million in 1960 to 8 million today. But traditionally, the problems that disproportionately affect the poorest have not benefited from innovation. That must change for big advances in health and development to occur. Grand Challenges is a family of grant initiatives focused on overcoming persistent bottlenecks to create new tools that can radically improve health in the developing world. A decade after its founding, Grand Challenges has galvanized new approaches that could one day impact millions of lives. http://www.grandchallenges.org For any inquiries please contact Cecilie Sørhus on Cecilie.Sorhus@gatesfoundation.org. GC 2016 - The London Evening Standard's…

Join Bill Gates and will.i.am for an exciting discussion on how science is delivering breakthroughs and innovations that are transforming lives around the world. Find out how scientific skills and knowledge are changing lives for the better, how the next generation of innovators will revolutionize our world and why London is a powerhouse for creative thinking. You’ll hear how these two philanthropists share a passion for science as a tool for developing innovative solutions and could win the opportunity to ask them your very own question on the topic. This will be followed by the Science Museum’s Contagion Lates, an evening of entertainment on the deadliest diseases facing the world today, and the innovative solutions being developed to combat them.
